Let Us Know You’re Coming

Sunday afternoon, October 18, come back to church to enjoy our yearly Pig Pickin’.

Through a series of events, we get to have the first onsite churchwide Sunday evening event since March—if the weather holds.

Our back parking lot will be full of great food, games, and inflatables, and don’t miss the photo bus. Head to the gym for basketball or volleyball, and find your finger lickin’ BBQ with all the fixings under the covered walkway.

Activities begin at 3:30 PM, but make sure you come between 4:30 and 5:30 for that BBQ! Little ones can have hot dogs, and don’t make the servers skimp on those sides.

Invite a friend or two and bring a lawn chair. Be safe, and bring along our suggested donation if you can. Please sign up here to let us know how many may be coming.

Don’t miss out on a good time!

Summer Design Internship

Summer Design Internship

Charissa wasn’t the only intern we had this summer.

We're thankful we also got to oversee a design internship for Taryn Prisk (InstagramLinkedIn). Taryn assisted us with design this summer as part of her graphic design program.

Working from overseas, Taryn has designed many graphics for us this summer. We’ve been able to publish several of her designs already in the form of social media images and videos.

Here’s a small sampling of the media Taryn helped create. Did you see these?

Thank you, Taryn! We wish you well finishing your program.

We’re thankful for the volunteers who help us create images, videos, and other graphics as well. If you are interested in being on the team, please send us some samples!

On Wednesday, 7/8 @ 7 PM we enjoyed a church-wide ice cream social combined with Pastor Ben Gordon and Hope Baptist Church.

It was so encouraging to see friends and families join together on a lawn chair for this outdoor event. Joining together for ice cream, singing, a powerful devotional by Pastor Gordon, it truly was a sweet fellowship.

It was a blessing to enjoy food and fellowship together for the first time in several months. Thank you for coming and your prayers! We hope the time together was a blessing to you!

Women's Movie Night (March)

Women's Movie Night (March)

Back in March, just before COVID-19 started to obliterate our calendar, about 40 women gathered in the East Wing to enjoy the Christian movie War Room.

We had just come out of our missions conference, “Leading Sinners Home.” Kathy Burget said the movie really reinforced messages on prayer, outreach, and mentoring others.

Kathy also shared some great lines from the movie:

“My joy doesn’t come from my friends, it doesn’t come from my job, it even doesn’t come from my husband. My joy is found in Jesus...”

“He gives us grace and he helps us to give it to others, even when they don’t deserve it.”

“You need to plead with God to do what only He can do, and then you need to get out of the way and let him do it.”

“Prayer does not merely change things, it will change us.”

“The goal of prayer is not to change God’s mind about what you want. The goal of prayer is to change your own heart, to want what He wants, to the glory of God.”

As you may know, our staff had several major communication pieces to send out during March, April, and even May. We do apologize for taking so long to share this report! We still aren’t able to host many activities yet, but we hope to have more women’s fellowships soon. And we’re very thankful for those who are willing to open up their homes and screens and continue building fellowship in the midst of a global pandemic.

Father's Day (& Delayed Mother's Day)

Father's Day (& Delayed Mother's Day)

This past Sunday at Morningside, we celebrated Father’s Day and a delayed Mother’s Day with bottles of Dad’s Root Beer and bars of Hershey’s chocolate!

We posted a quick tribute to dads on our Facebook page. Toward the beginning of the service, we watched Dave Rogers’s powerful film “An Open Door.” Click here if you missed it. Dave’s son Ethan, also a filmmaker, made a great tribute to his dad. Check out “My Godly Dad”:

During the service, our children worked on posters for their dads.

Thank you to all our Morningside fathers and mothers and the ways you love and spiritually influence not only your own family, but also those men, women, and children in our Morningside family as well.

ASAP: When to Come Back to Church

ASAP: When to Come Back to Church

Church is essential--not just for American society, but for your life. Not everyone is able to attend in person yet, and we respect that. But as soon as you're able, we want you to come—for your sake.

Last week a pastor posted "10 Reasons to Come Back to Church After COVID-19."

They're also important reasons to attend church during COVID-19:

1. We’re embodied creatures.

"No loving couple gladly accepts a 'long-distance relationship' as ideal. Neither should a loving church family."

2. The church is one body.

"Even at a distance, we’re still Christ’s body. But like any healthy body, we shouldn’t want to stay dislocated."

3. The Spirit is drawing us.

"When believers are separated involuntarily, we feel the tension—like a rubber band stretched too far. The Spirit within us yearns for us to be together, like that same rubber band pulling us back in."

4. We’re a spiritual family.

"We must be faithful during this season to reach out to those who can’t safely join us. But all who are able should seek to gather for our life-giving family reunions."

5. Preaching is a sacred moment.

"A feast enjoyed together is better than food eaten alone."

6. There’s nothing like singing together.

"God will hear the rising praises of the Christian church, and it will be good if we’re there to express them together."

7. We need baptisms and communion.

"The way we practice these things may look different for a season, but our hearts will need them more than we know."

8. You have a job to do.

"When we stay home, we can still listen and give and call and text virtually. But there are many ways we simply can’t serve or encourage or build up Christ’s body unless we’re physically present."

9. Our worship is a witness.

"We should rejoice that God’s now reaching new people with new methods. But the unbelieving world also needs to see the gospel’s transforming power embodied in a local family of Christians who love God and serve each other in the most gracious and gritty ways."

10. Greetings change lives.

"Just recently, our church held an outdoor worship service in our parking lot after not meeting for ten weeks. What were the happiest, most explosive moments? Our greetings. We need to see each other."

"In the life to come, we won’t be siloed and segregated in mansions of glory, but living and working and loving and serving together in a new world where righteousness dwells (2 Pet 3:13). So once we know it’s safe, wise, and no disservice to our communities, let’s gather together again—in person—until all things are new."

Upstate Youth Pre-Apprenticeship

Upstate Youth Pre-Apprenticeship

The Upstate Youth Pre-Apprenticeship Program is a collaboration between Save Our Sons of the Carolinas, Riverside Community Development Corporation and other local organizations providing a structured combination of school-based and work-based learning.  Through a coordinated effort involving business and industry, this program addresses the dual role of preparing students for the world of work and providing the Upstate with youth that is highly skilled and technologically competitive for the workforce.  A student participating in the program receives a certificate that is both academically challenging and relevant to employment skills such as painting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, forklift, and entrepreneurship in today’s economy.

Serving While Social Distancing

Serving While Social Distancing

Even during COVID-19 social distancing, it’s been a huge blessing to see church members not only giving financially but giving of themselves.

While our campus was mostly vacant Thursday afternoon, a small crew gathered to clear shrubs. The crew took advantage of the rain-softened soil but also used some hydraulic equipment to help remove holly bushes--which are notoriously strong. Facilities manager Steve Wright, operator Josh Weiss, and designer Jan Flinte got assistance from Helmut Flinte and Josiah and Micah Wright. Now that spring is here, Jesse Klobuchar has also started mowing our grass and trimming the remaining hedges again. Thanks to each one for working hard to help Morningside not just survive now but also thrive in the future!

New plantings—requiring less maintenance than the old—are on the way soon. If you’d like to help on planting day or mulching day (times TBA), contact Jan Flinte, Steve Wright, or the church office. Bring a spade and hand trowel for planting day if you can, and a small rake and gloves for mulching day.

We’ve heard of several other ministries this week as well—members picking up groceries for seniors, sending letters to children, and just checking on each other. (And if you missed our March 7 post sharing the work of two Morningside men building a ramp for a Morningside family, this link may help.) We’ve gotten to distribute some of the benevolent fund too; some needs have arisen or gotten worse because of the current coronavirus crisis. Thanks to each of you who are continuing to give and serve--even from a distance!

FBFI South Fellowship

FBFI South Fellowship

This week we’ve had the privilege to host pastors and others from around the South region of the Foundations Baptist Fellowship International.

The conference theme was “Discipleship for Life.” Dr. Jim Tillotson followed up his missions conference messages by speaking Monday night and Tuesday morning, and Tuesday night and this morning we heard from Pastor Mark Minnick of Mount Calvary Baptist Church. The conference closes out tonight with a message from Pastor Mike Yarborough of Faith Baptist Church (Delco, NC).

We’ve had great dessert fellowships after each evening service, and tonight’s ice cream fellowship is no exception. Thanks especially to several who volunteered to help make the conference happen!

Pizza Fellowship

Pizza Fellowship

On February 12, around 300 Morningsiders of all ages enjoyed pizza together. The kids enjoyed pizza-themed scavenger hunts, and many members helped set up, serve, and clean up.

Thanks to Dalila McCrum, Christy Perry, Jonathan Harper, and Jen Davisson for the photos! Stay tuned for more fellowship opportunities coming soon.
